Zoonoses, also referred to as zoonotic diseases, are diseases that can be transmitted to you or your children from your pets. Rabies is the most well-known disease of this type. Intestinal parasites can also be transmitted to people; these can have severe consequences to adults and horrific consequences to children.
Small children and toddlers are extremely susceptible to parasitism. We strongly recommend having your pet checked every six months for the presence of intestinal parasites.
Even house cats can obtain parasites from house plants. A recent study showed that 15 percent of all commercial potting soil is contaminated with roundworm eggs. Leptospirosis, a bacteria found in stagnant water, may be obtained by non-vaccinated pets. Raccoons, opossums, mice, and even squirrels shed this bacteria in their urine. Bacteria ingested if a pet drinks from a puddle or pond can cause severe kidney damage.
An infected pet will shed bacteria in their urine. You could be infected by cleaning up a urine accident and then failing to properly wash your hands.
Ringworm is a fungus that is easily spread to people, most often by stray cats and kittens. This fungus will spread to other pets and even to adults and children.
